Health Team Blog – October 14

ht1

Welcome to the first Health Blog. At Lyndon Green we encourage our children to make healthy choices in what they eat and drink. Our health team aims to promote healthy food choices across the school. We focus on playtime snacks, healthy lunch boxes and raising awareness of healthy choices.

In April we started working with a company called Food Net who are linked with the NHS, they have been running cooking workshops in school, which I know parents have attended and found very beneficial.

They have also worked with year 5 on cooking theory. Year 5 looked at the foods that are good for our body. They were very shocked to discover how much food was in certain favourite drinks. They were then challenged to swap a sugary drink for a healthy one. The parents of year 5 were then also invited along to a workshop where they became label detectives, looking at the fat content of foods. There were a few astonished gasps. Especially from me!

As the year goes on we will be updating the blog ½ termly with latest news and information.

ht3

Look out for a packed lunch survey soon, healthy recipe ideas, a health team newsletter and new displays going up in the dining room to promote healthy eating.

We would love to hear about any healthy meals you cook at home, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

There are two competitions over the season. For boys and girls there is a team event and an individual event. At the end of each race children are given a place card which is returned to to the teacher in charge on the night. These are added together to find the team score (the lower the score the better) from the first four finishers for the school.

Any child finishing in the top 20 scores individual points in the individual competition.

In total there are six races during the season, 3 before November and 3 after February half term.

Two other events are also scheduled. On October 13th is the relay event. For this the school chooses 4 boys and 4 girls to run. Each child has to run individually. Medals are awarded at the end for the winning teams.

During the Spring part of the season a Year 5 only race takes place. Medal are awarded at the end of this event also.

The dates for the Spring half of the season will be published when available.
