In September 2014 the primary school curriculum is to get a radical shake-up. So why the big change, and how will it affect your child?
In 2013 the government announced plans to overhaul the national curriculum.
For most children, these changes will take effect from September 2014, but children in Years 2 and 6 will follow the existing programmes of study until September 2015 in English, maths and science. From September 2013, schools will have the option of either continuing to teach the current curriculum or gradually transitioning to the new curriculum.
Why the big curriculum change?
The main aim is to raise standards, particularly as the UK is slipping down international student assessment league tables. Inspired by what is taught in the world’s most successful school systems, including Hong Kong, Singapore and Finland, as well as in the best UK schools, it’s designed to produce productive, creative and well educated students.
Although the new curriculum is intended to be more challenging, the content is actually slimmer than the current curriculum, focusing on essential core subject knowledge and skills such as essay writing and computer programming. It also follows on from similar curriculum revamps in Scotland and Wales, which were implemented in 2010 and 2008 respectively and have a similar focus on excellence and core skills

September 2014 sees a complete overhaul of the National Curriculum and here at Lyndon Green Junior School we will be looking at the work that we will be delivering to the children. This will be reflected in our delivery of our Cornerstones topics and will also mean that 2014-2015 will be a transition year as a number of topics will have already have been taught and therefore cannot be repeated.
Below is the Year 6 Cornerstones Curriculum Topics for the Year.
It is our intention to provide a curriculum here at Lyndon Green that Engages, Develops and Innovates children, allowing them to Express their own ideas in a confident and articulate way. We want our children to be able to have fun whilst they learn and not be presented with barriers. Over the period 2011-12, the staff and pupils of Lyndon Green has worked very hard to consider what is best for our pupils and that is why we have linked ourselves with Cornerstone Curriculum. We feel the philosophy behind Cornerstones matches ours here in School. The implementation of the Cornerstones Curriculum during the Academic year 2012 – 13 made a huge difference to our pupils and our staff. Our children loved all the different phases of learning and experienced so many different learning opportunities. We will continue to work with Cornerstones in the Academic Year 2013 – 14.
